“The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
These are words Jesus once said over 2,000 years ago. How relevant they are today indeed. Or how relevant they would be if they were proclaimed in such a manner and with such authority. It’s a wonder who Jesus would see as captives and oppressed, or as being blind in our times. It’s a wonder if the people Jesus said this to felt like they were on the brink and reaching a pivotal moment in history too. If they did, it’s a wonder how earth shattering this statement would feel to them when heard.
What would happen if we all prayed for that year of favor, and believed it would happen before even asking for it? There are not many moments in history where you can ask this question, and actually mean it. No exaggeration in the slightest, and no overstating. Has there ever been a time in which Jesus’ mission was more true and relevant than right now?
2020 has been a year that has taken the most battle tested and wisdom filled human beings, and left them speechless. Take any one of the major issues this year alone has presented, and almost all of us can say we have been affected by it in some way, shape or form. People from all backgrounds, on every social level.
God, may your year of favor come again. Bring peace to those working as hard as they can every single day. Bring liberation to those being held down by injustice. Bring healing to those who are sick. Give Jesus to those who have lost loved ones. Give sight to all of us, to see your perspective. Just like when your son declared it so many years ago. In Christ’s name, Amen.
